Why Lent Event?

Our world urgently needs a movement of attentive and generous discipleship.

The climate crisis is undoing decades of progress, driving poverty, food insecurity and forced migration across our world. There’s profound injustice at its heart: those who’ve contributed the least to this crisis are suffering the most, while those who’ve burned the most fossil fuels have largely insulated themselves from its effects.

UnitingWorld's Lent Event offers a way to step into meaningful action:

  • Take part in 40 For The Future - a climate challenge for all ages living more simply and raising funds for UnitingWorld projects
  • Invite a speaker to visit your congregation
  • Share stories, prayers and video each week with your congregation
  • Join a Prayer Circle with other congregations

The story behind Lent Event

How did Lent Event begin?

Lent Event began as an initiative of Uniting Church member Sarah White and West Epping Uniting Church in Sydney.

Since 2004, UnitingWorld's Lent Event has invited Australian Christians into a deeper understanding of global poverty and injustice, highlighting the imperative for the Church to work in partnership with our global neighbours to seek justice and share resources.

Through Lent Event, Christians across Australia have generously shared their time, prayers and resources to support life-changing sustainable development projects in the Pacific, Asia and Africa. It's help shift millions of dollars to where it's needed and impacted thousands of lives.

Along the way, we've reflected on the life of Jesus and the transformation we can see in our lives, communities and our world when we follow his footsteps in love and compassion for all creation.

Where does the money I raise go?

Since Lent Event began, people like you have helped raise more than $7 million to support the work of UnitingWorld, partnering with churches in the Pacific, Asia and Afica on sustainable community development projects.

The money you help us raise will go towards critical climate action through life-changing projects run by our dedicated local partners in the Pacific and Asia.

These are some of the ways you can help make a difference:

  • $20 can help our partners plant trees to stabilise landslide-prone areas and offset carbon.
  • $90 can help a family grow their own food garden, cutting down on food miles, improving heath and building resilience.
  • $250 can help resource a village to take action on poverty, health care and the environment.
  • $1,000 can help protect whole communities in the Pacific by stocking evacuation centres, securing water sources, and providing life-saving education.

Lent Event: 18 February - 2 April 2026
