A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Vanuatu islands on 16 December 2024, close to the capital city, Port Vila. There have been a number of aftershocks, and a another 6.1 magnitude earthquake on the morning of 17 December.  You can help.

As at 17 December, there are 14 confirmed deaths, over 200 people injured, and widespread damage to infrastructure and buildings in Port Vila (Red Cross Fiji, reported on ABC News). Communications have also been affected, so contact is difficult at this time.

The Vanuatu Government's National Disaster Management Office Situation Report on 18 December 2024 advises that the estimated affected population is 80,000 people. A State of Emergency has been declared. A number of buildings, bridges, and power, water and communication infrastructure have been badly damaged. Although most of the damage has occurred in Port Vila, nearby villages and off-shore islands have experienced landslides.

UnitingWorld’s response

Your donation will support relief efforts and contribute to rebuilding and community recovery, helping those affected by the earthquake to rebuild their lives and strengthen resilience for future disasters.

We were able to contact our partner, the Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu (PCV), on 19 December 2024. The PCV team are all safe. We have assured the PCV team of the prayers and support of the people of the Uniting Church in Australia.

This page will be updated when more information becomes available.

Our emergency relief activities are always conducted through our local partners, and are guided by their knowledge of community needs and the local context. As well as response to immediate priorities, long-term work to 'build back better' strengthens communities for future disasters.

UnitingWorld and our partners are committed to supporting women, children and the most vulnerable members of the community, who are disproportionately affected during disasters.
